Disco v. Retro
Because so much space was dedicated to the Readers Voice Awards in this week’s print edition, a few events going on this week didn’t get full attention. For example, Lord Byron’s 7th anniversary celebration of his hiNRG dance party Disco v Retro gets underway on Saturday night. That same night, DJ Shane Stiel comes to town for the ScoreParty at the Dallas Eagle. For live music, check out the Oak Lawn Band Saturday afternoon at Temple Emmanu-el, doing a concert dedicated to heroes and heroines.
There’s another music-based event on Saturday, and it’s unique. Uptown St. Germain Hotel, one of the finest dining-and-resting establishments in North Texas, is hosting one of its signature theme dinners. This time, it’s based around the Mick Jagger TV drama Vinyl, and celebrates the seminal year of 1973 with a retro look at artists from Warhol to Bruce Lee to Robert Goulet to Led Zeppelin, with a diverse soundtrack playing throughout the wine-paired dinner. It’s $95/person including wine, and gets underway at 7 p.m. Call 214-871-2516 for reservations.
A few plays are also opening this weekend that should be interesting — Buyer & Cellar at Stage West (Michael Urie did it at City Performance Hall 18 months ago, and was amazing) and Dante: Paradiso from MBS Productions, the final chapter in the classical adaptation.
Sports fans should know that OJ Jenkins is hosting her season launch for the Dallas Elite women’s football team on Saturday at Prime Time Grill; and the theme is March Madness at Gaybingo at the Rose Room that evening as well.
Victor Carrington build himself up from troubled gay kid to a success, which he recounts in his book Just When You Thought You Knew Me; he’ll be doing a book signing at Chocolate Secrets on Oak Lawn on Thursday.
Finally, if you are thinking about getting married, but don’t know how to do it, Dallas Voice is hosting both a workshop and a party and expo at the Renaissance Hotel on Sunday — both events are free.
