Six activists are scheduled to present stories of Dallas LGBT history tonight in the Rose Room at Station 4 as part of the Outrageous Oral series.
Former Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance President Steve Atkinson was instrumental in the passage of the nondiscrimination ordinances by the Dallas City Council, the DISD board and the DART board. He has served as board co-chair of Equality Texas and national co-hair of the HRC Board of Governors.
Dr. Cordell Adams specializes in cataract extractions, medical treatments, laser eye surgery for certain eye diseases and glaucoma surgery. Since high school, Adams has set the highest of standards for himself. A 1979 graduate of Jacksonville Senior High School in Jacksonville, Texas, he is the only black valedictorian. Darryl Baker is a retired City of Dallas worker. In the 1970s, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tangier, Morocco, and has been active in various causes for years.
Nell Gaither spent about 20 years in a first career of archeology and public history. In 2005, she returned to school for a master’s degree in library and information sciences, taking a position as a public librarian in 2007. In August 2011, she founded the nonprofit Trans Pride Initiative, and a year later began working full time for the organization.
Hardy Haberman has been an active in the leather community as a gay activist, author, speaker and filmmaker. His documentary on the leather lifestyle, Leather, has won numerous awards and appeared in festivals around the world, and his latest film, Out of the Darkness, The Reality of SM, is currently being used by healthcare professionals around the world.
Candy Marcum was a founder of Oak Lawn Counseling Center that became Oak Lawn Community Services. She is a counselor and co-authored the book, AIDS: The Caregivers Handbook in 1987. She served as national co-chair of the HRC Board of Directors and chaired the DFW Federal Club.
