We were sad to learn that Troy Sands passed away Sunday morning. He was a resident DJ at the Dallas Eagle. Sands built his reputation playing the old Brick on Maple Avenue and made a name for himself as a headlining DJ not only in Dallas, but throughout the country. I had the pleasure of writing this story on him as he made his return to the scene after a tough struggle with cancer.
This was posted by two of the Dallas Eagle’s managers on Facebook on Sunday:
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that a very beloved member of our family has left us today. DJ Troy Sands passed away this morning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Troy’s family and loved ones. The DJ booth at the Dallas Eagle will never be the same without his smile and laugh. You will be missed greatly Troy. We will post additional information concerning any service or memorial as we receive it.

Upon the news, people began posting their condolences on Sands’ Facebook page.
I had the joy,of dancing to his music, and the honor of knowing he and Morgan. He leaves a huge whole in the community that will not easily be filled.
Troy was a fantastic person loved my many and admired by more. He will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to his family. Gods speed Troy…
Troy was one of my best friends. We were roommates back in the 80s and luckily reconnected recently
thanks to facebook. I regret not being able to fly back to Dallas to see him and to meet his new circle of friends since I left Dallas several years ago. Troy will always remain in my heart.
He will be missed. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times at the Eagle and out and about in our community. What a sweet man with a kind soul.
A great DJ with an awesome personality. Troy never lost his passion for spinning and was always eager about life and living it to the fullest. He will be missed but remembered forever.
Troy was one of the first people I met in Dallas when I moved here years ago – he didn’t even know me, but yet took the time to make sure I felt welcome. His personality and grace will be missed by many
I’m so saddened by this news, Troy was kind and sweet. I will miss his smile and his music. He is and always will be a legend.
Troy was a awesome friend and my idol as a dj. I played a lot of gigs with him in Dallas, at Club one, Liquid, The Brick and Club 7. He was so giving and took me under his wing. I will never forget all the times we spent just listening to new music that i had and stuff he had. He could mix his ass off, and then make a new remix at home for the next night.

I DJed my first Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence with Troy at Cafe Lafitte. It was a great honor for me to DJ beside such a great DJ/Remixer…I was so nervous thinking that I would be working beside such a great guy but he made me feel so “at ease” and I learned so much from Troy….I could never begin to thank him….he will be greatly missed!

Troy’s introduction and time here on earth was clearly with great purpose — inspiring others with his brilliant and beautiful music. While we will miss his gleaming smile above the turn tables, I’m sure Troy’s out there dancing.
Came across this site with my friend Gus Marmo who dated Troy yrs ago .listening to music with my lover Francisco Guerra. Only to tumble apon the death notice of my friends old lover ..This was a very sad time for me ….share your love for music life is way to short be kind to your friends…
DJ Troy Sands was one of the very best club DJ’s I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. (sometime in 2001) I was the lighting operator in a Akron Ohio club . I had the opportunity to do a live light show for Troy Who was a guest DJ.It was probably the most enjoyable show I ever performed there. The crowd loved the show. He and his helper were very polite and respectful. I lost track of the club scene and just found out about his passing. I still have a copy of his promo cd he gave me that night. I just wish I had the opportunity to have done more light shows for him. He will missed even all the way up here in Ohio.
