Councilman Adam Medrano proclaimed June Pride Month in Dallas. He presented the proclamation to the city’s new LGBT Employee Group, CAPE. A rainbow flag is flying among other flags in Dallas City Hall throughout the month.
Several awards were presented during the ceremony held at noon today (Wednesday, June 10), outside the Council Chambers at City Hall.
Community Awards were given to Josh Rudner, a 16-year-old Greenhill School student who has lobbied the Texas Legislature and spoken at Pride rallies, and to Carmarion Anderson who has organized in communities of faith.
Ally Awards went to Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins and Councilwoman Carolyn Davis. Both served on city pension boards and were instrumental in securing equal benefits for LGBT employees.
The Leadership Award went to Councilman Lee Kleinman.
Also in attendance was Councilman Jerry Allen whose committee approved a number of changes in city ordinances and policies that equalized benefits and updated wording to be more inclusive of the trans community.
“None of this could have been done without the resolution,” Medrano said, referring to the resolution, proposed by the LGBT Task Force and brought to the council by Allen, that set in motion all changes to city policy to equalize all policies.
