With roughly one-third of precincts reporting, Dallas County Democrats must be getting at least a little nervous.
That’s because Democrats in races for countywide office aren’t quite pulling away from their Republican opponents as expected — at least not yet.
Openly gay District Clerk Gary Fitzsimmons now leads his Republican challenger, Tammy Barnes, by only about 1,o00 votes, or less than 1 percentage point.
Meanwhile, District Attorney Craig Watkins is trailing Republican challenger Danny Clancy, and Democrat Clay Jenkins is trailing Republican Wade Emmert in the race for county judge.
The biggest bright spot for Democrats right now is Dr. Elba Garcia, who continues to lead incumbent Republican County Commissioner Ken Mayfield. However, even with a Garcia victory, if Jenkins doesn’t win the county judge race, Democrats won’t have a majority on the Commissioners Court.
