The LGBT community will rally on Cedar Springs after the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals hears the Texas marriage equality case on Friday, Jan. 9.
That day, the 5th Circuit court in New Orleans hears three cases including the Texas marriage equality case in the morning. The Texas marriage amendment outlawing the relationship recognition of same-sex couples in Texas was found unconstitutional at the U.S. district court level last February.
The 5th Circuit will hear two other cases as well — one from Mississippi and one from Lousisiana. A judge in Mississippi also found that state’s law unconstitutional but a Louisiana judge ruled that state had the right to discriminate.
Dallas Voice’s Erin Moore and Lambda Weekly’s Patti Fink will be in New Orleans on Friday covering the proceedings. A ruling is not expected for at least a few weeks.
That evening at 5:30 p.m., the LGBT community in Dallas will gather at the Legacy of Love Monument on Cedar Springs Road at Oak Lawn to talk about the day’s events. Community leaders will share the importance of marriage equality for LGBT families.
The rally is co-sponsored by Resource Center, Hope for Peace & Justice, DGLA, Equality Texas, Stonewall Democrats, Log Cabin Republicans-Dallas, Indigenous Peoples Liberation Party, Congregation Beth El Binah. Other groups are expected to join. Everyone is welcome to attend. The rally is hosted by Todd Whitley of Equality Texas and Rafael McDonnell of Resource Center.
