The Clooney Foundation has given the Southern Poverty Law Center a $1 million grant to partner with SPLC in fighting hate groups in the United States. The grant comes in the wake of the white nationalist rally in Carlottesville, Va., that left one person dead and many others injured.
Two police offers were also killed when the helicopter they were using to monitor the massive hate rally crashed.
“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States,” George and Amal Clooney said. “What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”
SPLC President Richard Cohen said he and his organization were also “shocked by the size, ugliness and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville. It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right.”
Cohen said SPLC is “deeply grateful” to the Clooney Foundation for the grant and the partnership.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice was co-founded by George and Amal Clooney in 2016 to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world. The couple serve as co-presidents.
The SPLC is the premier U.S. nonprofit organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists. It currently tracks more than 1,600 extremist groups operating across the country, and has used litigation to win crushing court judgments against 10 major white supremacist organizations and 50 individuals who led them or participated in violent acts.
