Lesbian teenager Alike (Adepero Oduye) explores her identity in Dee Rees' 'Pariah'

CinéWilde, Texas’ only monthly LGBTQ film screening series, will wrap up Black History Month with a screening of Black lesbian filmmaker Dee Rees’ Pariah, and an open mic hosted by Crush, an internationally-renowned slam poet and founder of the monthly queer open mic Fluid Fridays.

Crush will also host an open mic after the film.

Pariah, which originally premiered at Sundance in 2011, follows teenager Alike (Adepero Oduye) who lives in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood with her parents (Charles Parnell, Kim Wayans) and younger sister (Sahra Mellesse).

Alike quietly embraces her identity as a lesbian as she is looking for her first lover, but she wonders how much she can truly confide in her family.

The open mic will kick off with a performance by Crush right after the film. Those who want to participate in the open mic should bring your poems, story excerpts, songs or anything else they’d like to share with your community.

CinéWilde, supported in part by the city of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture, has a mission to showcase the contributions of the queer community in the film industry by showing movies made by queer artists.
