Chilean President Michelle Bachelet

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet signed a law on Monday, April 13, allowing same-sex couples to enter into civil unions, granting same-sex couples many of the rights opposite-sex couples have always enjoyed.
This makes Chile more progressive than Texas.
Chile is one of South America’s most conservative countries. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay already have marriage equality. Ecuador and Colombia also have civil unions.
“This ends the monopoly of having to recognize unions, families, as just within marriage,” said Rolando Jimenez, president of the Gay Liberation and Integration Movement. “This is very good news for Chile.”
The new law will go into effect in six months.
