Democratic incumbent Lon Burnam was on his way to an easy win in his campaign for an eighth term representing District 90 in the Texas Legislature Tuesday night. But his race was one of few brights spots for Democrats in Tarrant County.
With 91 percent of the votes counted, Burnam, long considered a strong ally of the LGBT community, was defeating Republican challenger Larry Keilberg, 65 percent to 35 percent. But two other Democratic lawmakers considered to be friends of — or at least, friendly toward — the LGBT community were losing their re-election bids.
Paula Pierson, first elected to represent District 93 in 2006, was trailing Republican Barbara Nash 47 percent to 50 percent with 48 percent of the votes counted. And in District 96, with 66 percent of the votes counted, incumbent Democrat Chris Turner was trailing Republican Bill Zedler by 6 points, 47 percent to 53 percent. Turner was first elected to the state House in 2008 when he edged out Zedler — then the incumbent — 51 percent to 47 percent.
