Warwick, the owner of the Melrose Hotel which last week announced plans to purchase The Bronx, the restaurant that has anchored the gayborhood for 35 years, released their plans for the real estate today.
“The current plans call for a large and pillar-less ballroom which would be complemented by additional meeting and conference space in a nearby building. The construction of a spa and a swimming pool is also under study,” Warwick said.
Whatever it ends up being, it sounds like it will not be a restaurant — and certainly not The Bronx.
The Bronx occupies a building constructed in the early 20th century. It would presumably be razed to make room for whatever construction the Melrose pursues.
Really? This is all we can add to our gayborhood?!? There is so much more that space could be used for that our community would actually be able to use and benefit from.
At least it’s for the hotel’s expansion and not added parking, which was the original concern.
OH NO!!! There goes one of the best gayborhood resturant ever ahhh, will definitely miss all the staff especially David. No more migas & mimosa. 🙁
Unfortunately Nathan, tanned cabana boys bringing drinks poolside is exactly what this new generation wants. f*ck history and community.
What gayborhood? Card shop? long gone. Variety of bars? long gone, replaced by a corporate conglomerate. There’s an underwear store. An overpriced boutique. How many $75.00 candles does one need? It’s a couple blocks of bars and burgers, that’s it. Even the ‘mos have moved on. Look at the yuppies in all the townhomes in the nieghborhood. Oak Lawn has died a slow death.
“The Bronx occupies a building constructed in the early 20th century. It would presumably be razed to make room for whatever construction the Melrose pursues.” – And so continues the grand Dallas (American?) tradition of tearing down the historic in favor the new & bland.
Tisha- I live right in the heart of Cedar Springs and just moved here last year. Although I LOVE tanned cabana boys bringing us drinks, this is a complex to be used by Warwick guests and lets face it. How many CORPORATE FUNCTIONS are they REALLY going to hold there? The rooms are overpriced for what you get and I know about paying for location but come on! Montemalone – I hear where you are coming from but I have fun at these establishments and I only frequent them maybe once a week or once every two. As far as NUVO, I agree that place blows! I think Union Jack has some pretty ok things and the pricing is pretty reasonable. Agreed that how many pairs of ass-less underwear can one really have? That is the fault of the dirty old buyers in Skivvies. But all in all Cedar Springs is not Yuppie by any means. Of course everyone wants to live where the gays live! Property has ALWAYS been that way in ANY city I have ever lived IN or OUT of the U.S. My favorite bars to go to here though are the ones that are privately owned. They are more fun and I think THAT is the way to actually support our community. How we use Cedar Springs is up to us and it IS what you make of it. I just really dont think a ballroom is what is going to be profitable for the area OR the hotel. I LOVE the thought of more restaurants that are easy on the eyes AND has a great cuisine! That’s all i have to say for now.
I hate to see the building go, but it will be nice for the guests at the Melrose to have a pool and additional gather spaces. I would have preferred to see another gay establishment take it’s place. A few more yards of gayborhood is gone. tic toc…tic toc…
@ Montemalone – I agree w/ you. The when we were in Dallas last year, it was a sad, faded area.
What is it about web blogs that brings out the bitter, anonymous haters? So many “business experts” that think they know better. You’re bashing successful, long-term businesses, have any of you actually done that? The area continues to grow (and yes, change). So many gays that think if it’s not gay, it doesn’t belong in this neighborhood. It makes me sad that, on the few occasions that I actually read the comments, it seems to be filled with the “us vs them” mentality. Two points: most of the gay businesses survive with support from straight consumers, as did the Bronx for many years; and the Melrose Hotel has been in this neighborhood long before it was a gay neighborhood.
WE the gay community made Oak Lawn what it is and We the gay community can restore it
to whatever.
melrose is a fine hotel that has been there longer than any of the bars sitting on thoses two blocks.Get Real
our friends need a place to stay when they visit Dallas and there just trying to inprove it. I loved the Bronx also and went there for many many years and will never forget all the good times it brought.moving on..
