An overwhelming majority of registered voters in Texas say they support a significant expansion of gay rights, according to the first-ever in-depth statewide poll on LGBT issues.
The scientific poll commissioned by Equality Texas surveyed voters on 12 key issues, from civil unions to workplace discrimination to school bullying. On 10 of the 12 questions, a majority of respondents said they would support an expansion of gay rights. The only two issues on which the LGBT community didn’t receive majority support were same-sex marriage and recognition of same-sex marriages from other states.
“Equality Texas envisions a state where all Texans are treated equally, with dignity and respect,” the group said in a press release. “This first-ever statewide poll on these rights clearly shows our vision is already shared by the vast majority of Texans. This concrete data demonstrates a bipartisan shared vision that crosses all demographic lines: political party affiliation, race, age and geographic location.”
Equality Poll 2010, conducted by The Glengariff Group Inc. and released earlier today, surveyed 1,000 registered voters between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2. The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
Here’s a snapshot of key findings:

This poll tells me two important things. Civil unions should be put on the ballot for the next election. It seems to have across-the-board support by a majority of citizens; and as we’ve already come to realize across the country, gay marriage is supported by a majority of people that are under the age of 40. It’s only a matter time when 40 becomes 50, and then there will clearly be a majority that supports equality for gay citizens.
This is a very encouraging poll! A lot has changed in five years, and maybe more will change in another five!
I’m straight and I came across this survey in a search and am laughing about the results. You homosexuals are kidding yourself if you think that support for gay rights is this high in Texas and you’re just as deluded to believe a poll put out by ‘Equality Texas’.
Uhm yeah. “Not a fag” … If you’re “not a fag,” why are you doing a web search on gay topics? Pretty much the only way you’d have come across this. So you’re straight, fine great. You simply show a deplorable lack of maturity laughing at this. Its not really a laughing matter. Heres my Christmas wish for you. May you find yourself gay for a year, so you can walk a mile in our shoes.
Nicely said, John. Yeah, the people that protest the most (“I’m not a fag.”) are always the self-loathing closet-cases. The straight people I know couldn’t care less if gay people get married. It doesn’t effect them, so why should they care? 75% of the country knows someone that’s gay, and most of them aren’t threatened by gay people… and they don’t bother doing web searches trying to find out about gay rights in Texas.
Indeed, “not a fag”…I suppose you were doing “research” on the gays “for your school project”.
For gay kids,
THE most dangerous people in the world are the Closet Cases.
They will do, and say anything to protect themselves; sacrifice any ideal to hide their inherently deviant and unscrupulous ways…Now that the conversation has been started, AND the Constitution continues to side with “Equality and Justice for ALL”, the world’s “Not a Fags” are going to have to live with why they have been lying and stealing rights, and cheating loved ones all this time… Once equality becomes the law of the land, and The Will of The People is reaffimed as being the constitution and ONLY The constitution, these “closet people” will go postal as they short out in much the way the above “Not a Fag” appears to be shorting out. Could be fun for us well-adjusted type to watch as they scramble -in vain- to justify all the unjustifiable deceptions they have taken part in, to the detriment of all…
well why this is half-assed good news…I wouldn’t bother to ever go to Texas…no thank u…..wouldn’t waste my time, or tourism dollars in a Hate state.
That this survey was done over the telephone scares me a bit, for the people who respond to telephone surveys tend to sway strongly in one direction. It is more likely that those who care about the subject will respond to the survey, and those who support equality Texas will also be more likely to agree to the survey, so the results are bound to be skewed. My knowledge of statistical analysis is very basic and I would be very interested if there is someone who could give a comprehensive but understandable analysis of how accurate this information actually is.
From my personal experience Not A Fag and Disgusted American are emotionally dangerous persons to be avoided while in their current mental condition.
