Hamburger Mary’s — Dallas, located at 4123 Cedar Springs Road, Ste. 101, has closed its doors, according to co-owner Donald Smith.
Smith and Romeo Vale took over ownership the restaurant and drag venue from HV Entertainment LLC in early January this year. Smith said today that he and Vale had “tried to make it work, but we just couldn’t.”
But, he added, “We are very proud of the community we built here.”
Smith said he and Vale are moving back to Houston where they will “try to regroup” and maybe return to Dallas with a new venture in a couple of years.
Mario’s Mexican and Salvadoran Restaurant, which was located at the other end of the building at 4123 Cedar Springs Road, closed earlier this month.

No offense to these guys, I know they tried, but the food was just horrible! We tried the drag brunch a few times. And just basic brunch meal like chicken and waffles were dried up tiny frozen chicken strips and dried up waffles. It’s like they weren’t even trying with the food. This place would be amazing if they had just concentrated on making the food worthwhile. Just because it’s a venue on the strip doesn’t mean it has to be below average. I’m sorry to see it go though but not surprised.
I only get the diva nachos that’s it lol
The story is a bit vague. Was it closed because of poor management related to things like back taxes or operating revenue, or because of a leasing issue? I assume leasing because Mario’s also vacated?
The previous owner didn’t give a crap about this restaurant or anything that come with it. It was meant to just be a cash cow for him. He never really actually cared about it. Even though the man is worth MILLIONS he still didn’t care to put money into it. He already has businesses, venues, clubs, 30+ single family homes spanning over 2 states. This was just simply a “side quest” for him it seemed.
ARE KIDDING ME.. ARTHUR HOOD IS BROKE. He is a crook.
he is being sued and his house is in foreclosure. All scams. Pull up court records in collin and dallas county. He is not worth anything. I do agree is did not care
Hamburger Mary’s was broken into a few months ago and both of their safes were stolen. I spoke to them that day as I was moving out of the build above. They said it was going to be hard to keep going after that.
I’m truly heartbroken over Mario’s. It is one of my favorite restraints in the city.
The entire block of 4123 is really struggling right now. I lived there for 4 years.
Arthur hood is a major crook and con artist. Google his court records. Someone needs to do a story on him
To be honest people are sick and tired of drag shows. Everywhere you go is a freaking drag show. People are fed up with men prancing around in drag
Too much crime, high rents, lack of parking along with high prices.
What do you expect?
There’s probably multiple reasons for the closing of Hamburger Mary’s, but I agree with Grant. No one wants to see a damn drag show in 2025!
I went to Hamburger Mary’s a few months after it first opened, years ago. I was not impressed with the underground parking. For a California-based restaurant, not impressed with the food, either. The one and only time I went. That was in the 1990s. That underground parking garage seemed to be the precursor of things to come, to me. Architects needed to have their credentials examined for building such a flaky building!
Some managers know how to pivot and change directions in how things are done AND how they invest in the business. Some don’t understand this OR know how to do it.
I could be wrong, but didn’t Hamburger Mary’s originate in San Diego? That was 20 years ago that I remember it.
Then at some point it was turned into “Urban Moe’s” or “Moe’s” as we’d call it – located in Hillcrest (the gay strip kind of like Dallas’ Oaklawn). The closure of LGBTQ+ bars / clubs is happening in all areas of the country. You can blame it on many things – but I think alot is due to people not socializing in person anymore. Instead they use apps or just stay home feeling lonely. Or maybe it is the price of land. Many clubs I remember in “Hot” Atlanta in the late 1990’s are gone with condos replacing them in “Midtown.” The gay community there was very segregated. Looking at the Dallas LGBTQ+ community from an outsider like me – I see alot of segregation and unless you have roots here – Oaklawn is not as friendly compared to other communities in the US. Just an observation from a non-Texan resident.
You’d think after scamming so much money he’d be able to afford fixing his fat ugly face.
