With 79 percent of vote centers having reported in the Saturday, June 7, runoff between Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos for mayor of San Antonio, Ortiz had an insurmountable 10,000-vote lead, prompting Pablos to concede the race, according to reports on social media by Joey Palacios with Texas Public Radio.

Her runoff victory makes Jones the third woman and the first openly LGBTQ person to serve as mayor of San Antonio. Due to city charter amendments recently approved by voters, Jones will serve a four-year term as mayor rather than a two-year term.

Palacios also noted that with the results of this runoff, there will be seven women and four men on the 11-member San Antonio City Council, the first time ever that the majority of the council members have been women.
