The Broadway Series at the Winspear Opera House will reportedly be the “largest yet,” with six season-inclusive shows and three non-subscription special, according to Doug Curtis, CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Notwithstanding that, for the most part, the runs of these shows is shorter than usual, most playing about a week instead of the typical 12 days.
It was already widely known that first show of the season would be a co-production with the Dallas Theater Center, Hairspray, which runs July 7–July 15. The rest of the 2018–19 season begins in December.
The next subscription show will be the musical A Bronx Tale (Dec. 26–Jan. 6, 2019), based on the play, film and life story of Chazz Palmintieri. That will quickly be followed by William Finn’s much-lauded and groundbreaking musical Falsettos (Feb. 12–17), about the travails of a gay couple, one of whom has a son and ex-wife. A recent Lincoln Center revival, starring Christian Borle and Andres Rannells (pictured), was a hit in New York.
Next up will the hysterical Tony-winning The Play That Goes Wrong (June 11–16). That will be followed by Bat Out of Hell (June 27–July 7), a recent jukebox musical featuring the songs of Jim Steinman (based on the album sung by Meat Loaf). The final subscription show will be Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Aug. 22–Sept. 1),  based on the children’s book, not the popular movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Two non-subscription shows actually precede A Bronx Tale: The returns of A Christmas Story (Dec. 12–16) and Chicago (Dec. 18–23). A third show, the return of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (June 18–23) comes next summer.
Six-show packages start at $149. Season subscribers get priority on seating and discounted parking. Visit ATTPAC.org for more information.
