Last year the U.S. saw a devastating record set; at least 57 transgender and gender-nonconforming people died violently in 2021. The trend continues this year, with at least 32 transgender and gender-nonconforming people having died violently so far in 2022. Three of the 2022 victims — Marisela Castro and Paloma Vasquez of Houston and Cypress Ramos of Lubbock — were murdered in Texas, where Republican elected officials continue to target the transgender/gender-queer community with discriminatory laws. On Sunday, Nov. 20, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Northaven Church, at 11211 Preston Road, joins with Oak Lawn United Methodist and Lakewood United Methodist to hold services to remember and honor the victims of anti-transgender violence. The service starts at 5 p.m.
