With Hurricane Harvey upgraded to Category 3 status and due to hit the Texas coastline some time tonight (Friday, Aug. 24) or early tomorrow morning, organizers for the Austin Pride parade and festival have announced that they are cancelling the celebration for now and will reschedule soon.
Organizers said they are “currently looking at dates in September and October.” (Pssst! Hey Austin, Dallas Pride is Sept. 16-17. Don’t choose those dates.)
The official statement reads:
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the Annual Festival and Parade are being rescheduled. We know how much everyone had their hearts set on tomorrow’s Celebration, however the safety and security of everyone attending and participating in PRIDEi is paramount in our plans for a successful PRIDE Celebation. With that said, we are working with the city of Austin’s various departments to reschedule the PRIDE Festival and Parade. We will of course announce the new dates as soon as they are confirmed. As much as the track of the storm changed on a daily basis, we hoped for the best and tried to stay optimistic., however this decision wasn’t really a decision at all. When it comes to the safety and security of everyone involved, the Austin PRIDE Board and Co-Chairs take that matter very seriously. We look forward to seeing you soon! With love, Austin PRIDE.”
