The Arts District will be lit up tonight for the free public art event Aurora.
According to the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s website, the Dallas Arts District “is transformed into an open-air, urban playground of contemporary art on an expansive scale.”
The event is “immersive, free and public exhibition will showcase work by local and international artists, selected by a team of renowned curators. In an unforgettable night, visitors experience their familiar urban environment as it is converted into an interactive canvas for some of the world’s most innovative contemporary art.”
The area included runs the length of Flora Street from One Arts Plaza to the Dallas Museum of Art and from Ross Avenue to the Deck Park named after an 8-year-old kid. (It’s Dallas Voice policy not to name minors used as pawns in custody battles when unnecessary).
The event was created by former Oak Lawn Councilwoman Veletta Lill and artists Shane Pennington and Joshua King.
68 acres? Not anymore
The event covers the entire Arts District that has shrunk recently, if you haven’t been down there lately, with the addition of a hideous glass box office tower that houses an accounting firm. No, an accounting firm isn’t arts, so the Arts District, that Dallas claims to be the largest (by area) in the country, is no longer 68 acres.
Parking
Large crowds are expected so parking will be limited and the so-called Lexus (worst car I’ve ever owned) parking lots will be gouging.
Easiest way to get there: take DART. Park free in any DART parking lot and take the Red, Blue, Orange or Green lines to Pearl/Arts District Station. Walk north two blocks to the Arts District. The event takes place from dusk (about 7 p.m.) to 2 a.m.
