Dancin’ machine
DJ K. L. Kemp recently started Alt-Disco, a night at the Fallout Lounge where he spins what he calls “no bullshit old-school underground gay disco … just like they used to play at the Trocadero Transfer back in the day in San Francisco.” Someone who posts “Georgio Moroder for President” as his political view on Facebook and invites the gays to party it up like it’s 1979 sounds like a true disco devotee.
Oh, and if you didn’t catch it, he spins vinyl only. Sah-weet!
Tonight is also the DJ’s birthday, so in addition to his “electronic sleaze” and “hi-nrg funk,” he says there will also be cake. Just try not to drop crumbs while doing The Hustle.
DEETS: Fallout Lounge, 835 Exposition Ave. at 9 p.m.
I want to thank you for posting this – especially the wiki about the TT. It’s amazing the power that place and space can have in our lives. I wasn’t old enough to get in to over 21 clubs until much later than the ’79 heyday, but I’d have to say partying at the Trocadero Transfer changed my life more than once. Bondage-a-go-go is there (TT’s space is now called the Glas Kat) tonight, but every time I’ve been there for the last few years the DJ’s were incompetent and the music did nothing for me. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t be in Law School today if I hadn’t accepted an invitation to go to Bondage-a-go-go by “someone” who later decided to tell the police, my boss, and all my friends that we had never dated and that I was a stalker. I was at SF’s Pride a few weeks ago, and the Leather Alley was co-sponsored by a legal group promoting mediation, not litigation… I’m curious what music is really going to be played here. Can you publish a basic playlist? (PS spellcheck: It’s Giorgio Moroder, with an ‘i’).
Hi there. You can expect stuff tonight along the lines of Gino Soccio, Patrick Cowley, Sylvester, Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer, Lime, Carol Jiani, August Darnell, The Jacksons, Boris Midney, Cerrone, Boys Town Gang, etc. Haven’t really put my crate together yet. =)
I wasn’t around to party it up at the Troc in ’79, but I was fortunate enough to attend a disco event there last year and plan to go again this October. There’s definitely an influence and a vibe. I hope to capture some of it in my local biweekly event. Come join us!
