Last night the SMU’s Fashion Media Department along with its Women’s and LGBT center hosted the third annual All About Ballroom. The event brought the House of Unbothered Cartier Gulf Coast Chapter to campus to talk to students about ballroom culture and fashion. House members Overseer Yeezy, Legendary Father Amor, Godmother Xiaiir, and BoiBoi sat on a panel moderated by Professor Jenny Davis. They explained the difference ballroom competitions and categories as well as how fashion plays in to their performances. Many of the members commented on how the house has come to be a second family to them, especially when their biological family is unsupportive. They also emphasized that ballroom has a place for everyone, as long as you’re open and accepting of others.

After the panel the house members got changed and out on an exciting performance. The whole audience was impressed by the dance moves and talent exhibited. Following the performance the audience was encouraged to participate in three ballroom categories, with awards for best dressed, runway, and performance. The SMU crowd displayed their own talent with audience members strutting and dancing their way down the runway.

Overall it was a very fun and informative night that showcased the wonderful ballroom culture of Dallas.

  1. Ah, the allure of the ballroom—a sanctuary where the marginalized find family and the misunderstood discover acceptance. The House of Unbothered Cartier gracing SMU’s event exemplifies this haven, where fashion intertwines with identity, and performance becomes a lifeline. In a world quick to judge, such gatherings remind us that true elegance lies in embracing one’s authentic self.
