I absolutely love cake. To be specific, I love Costco white birthday cake. I can seriously eat an entire cake in one sitting. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t.

But here’s the odd thing.: I don’t care for the icing on my cake.

I like the cake-portion, the spongy-cakey-goodness. But the icing? I can take it or leave it. I usually scrape it to the side of my plate.

I feel the same way about chocolate chips. I love chocolate chip cookies, but I don’t really care for chocolate chips.

Does all this sound odd to you? It is a little odd. A lot odd, actually.

But no more odd than the sweet, syrupy, sugary processed icing that the folks at the Log Cabin Republicans have been trying to stuff down our throats lately — even here, yes, in our community paper, the Dallas Voice.

Now, I’ve vacillated from extreme anger to “meh,” to actual admiration over the Voice’s decision to publish these articles and interviews. I know many of my friends have vowed to “never read the Voice again.” Ok, I get it.

However, ignoring a growing condition will not make it go away. I have friends on staff at the Voice, and on several occasions, I have picked up my phone, ready to make a call. But then I calmed down and evaluated and understood that while they might be opinions I vehemently disagree with, they ARE opinions of fellow community members and have just as much right to be shared as mine.

We cannot simply ignore them.

The views of the Log Cabin Republicans (and their support of the MAGA movement) are like a quiet medical condition. We can only treat it if we identify it, prescribe for it and, finally, defeat it.

It’s a thin line our community news is treading, but guess what? Ignoring does not make it go away.

Back to the cake.

How could we NOT love ideals like lower taxes, gay men posted to diplomatic positions, cheaper eggs, more money in our wallets? How could we not want a safer community, free from crime and threats from people that wish to do us harm?

On the surface, the benefits of a Trump presidency, as outlined by the leaders of the Log Cabin Republicans, sound wonderful! The sweet, soft, delicious icing of our government cake — tasty. Harmless. And something we all should love and welcome.

I want those things. I want those things for all of us!

But, my friends, it’s all icing. It’s the cake you have to watch out for.

Buried under all those beautifully crafted PR bullet points — and not far beneath for anyone willing to do the work — is a vastly different agenda, an agenda built on the backs of the rights of our LGBTQ+ siblings (especially the T), immigrants that contribute to our community, women, our allies in the world.

It is an agenda that seeks to empower the wealthy and privileged among us, at the price of the freedoms, liberties and safety of those most vulnerable. And, if you are reading this, and you are a person who identifies as LGBTQ+, and especially if you are a person of color, or a trans person, you are at the very top of that list.

YOU, now, are the most vulnerable.

As I write this, tomorrow will be one week into the Trump presidency. One week — and already, we are seeing the above fears being played out.

This is not hysterical fear-mongering on our part. These are things that are actually happening. They have already happened.

One week, folks. They told us “Project 2025” was a lie. One week, and now we know it certainly wasn’t.

I’m old enough to remember the Log Cabin Republicans from way back when — back in the Reagan/Clinton/Gore/Bush days. We disagreed then. We had severe and stark policy differences.

But those were different times, and we were different people and a different community. I never felt that the support of a movement could erase my existence. I might not have been able to get married, but I never felt threatened. I was already invisible. How much worse could it get?

The Log Cabin Republicans annoyed me, but I still called them friends. Their support of Republican candidates and movements were a matter of policy differences, not way of life.

So much has changed. We’ve made so much progress. And now, that progress is being severely threatened.

The MAGA movement is a threat not just to LGBTQ+ people, but to anyone who does not adhere to a specific worldview. And, my fellow community members, that’s most of us.

My personal opinion? It’s not Trump. Trump is a cartoon character. Trump is the manipulatable figurehead of a much more dangerous creature — the MAGA movement. He’s a loud, brash, gullible human, who probably doesn’t really care all that much whether or not we are gay, trans, a mongoose — no, he likely doesn’t care.

He cares about power. And the people giving him power are the same people who have been sharing their views in this very news outlet lately.

And right behind these people, are the folks with pitchforks. The people who would rather us not exist. The people who wish us back into the closets, unable to marry, unable to receive medial care, unable to live our lives free of abuse and danger.

One more reminder: Trump won the popular vote by the thinnest margin in history. A popular vote victory smaller than our very own D/FW metroplex.

The other side will have you believe otherwise. That there is a mandate. It’s just not true. Don’t fall for it. There is no mandate. There is no national movement to the “right.”

The Log Cabin Republicans are icing — so smooth, so “acceptable,” shimmery, sugary, tasty. But my friends, dig deeper. Do the work, and you will see. There is a threat behind all their pretty words.

I hope and pray in four years, I look back with embarrassment at the audacity of this opinion piece, at how ridiculous I was. I truly do. But until then, we must keep our guard up and ready.

But, a week in? Doesn’t sound all that dramatic does it?

Guard up, my friends. Focus on the cake.

  1. I’m happy that people like Sean have this response. He is an outlier. The VAST majority of the country believe adamantly that there are only two genders…not five, or ten, or seventy.

The VAST majority of Americans want a safe and strong country. And if you want to come to the United States, you have to do it legally.

The Stonewall Democrats do seem to have clout here in Texas. They managed to unseat Gilberto Hinojosa, the Texas Democrat Party Chairman, right after the November election. It seems that Mr. Hinojosa was far too moderate for the Stonewallers. Hinojosa also believed there’s two genders…male and female.

So keep doing what you are doing. Run, no race, the leftist extreme! We Republicans will continue to win for decades. Common sense will prevail.

    1. Are you under the impression that our scientifically illiterate people get to, by opinion poll, decide that biology they do not understand doesn’t exist?
Hint: they also don’t get to decide the planet is flat
or that the earth is less than 8000 years old
      or that evolution isn’t real
The majority of poorly educated Americans not understanding something…doesn’t allow them to vote reality away.
Are you one of the folks in favor of voting for pi to be 3 because its real value 3.14159…requires too much thinking?

Of the several hundred vastly overeducated MIT graduates that I know, not a single one has any trouble understanding that gender is more complicated than black or white thinking can handle. Because they are not scientifically illiterate bigots.

  2. Thank you for sharing TRUTH!

“Silence=Death” was true fighting HIV/AIDS ; is no less true today.

March, parade, protest, scream till we defeat the oppressive ideals of MAGA and Project 2025.

Freedom is precious, fought for it.

  3. As a proud Gay Republican, I know all too well what it’s like to be the minority within the minority. And to be called out and cancelled because of my conservative views. This happened to me just last Sunday at a small Gay-oriented church I have been visiting. Needless to say, I won’t be back. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind politically. That would be an exercise in futility. Nor do I want anyone trying to change my political beliefs. And I’ve long accepted that there are many things that Democrats and Republicans will never agree on. This may come as a shock to Gay Democrats, but Gay Republicans felt every bit the way you do now under President Trump while Presidents Obama and Biden were in office. We hated every moment of it and hoped and prayed it would end. One of the great things about being American and living in the US is that if you truly feel your life is threatened or your rights will be taken away, or your mere existence will be eradicated (the Trans community only has themselves to blame for this), you are free to leave. No one is going to hold a gun to your head and make you stay. Pack your stuff and take the next plane out of the country to parts known or maybe unknown. And yes, President Trump does have a mandate from the majority. He overwhelmingly won the Electoral College, and he also won the popular vote. So, if you are a Gay Democrat, please do what liberal psychologists are encouraging you to do. Go out into the forest, scream, cry, rage, and get it all out. You’ll feel a little better and then try to get on with your lives. Just like Gay Republicans have had to do for 12 of the last 16 years. Because like it or not, President Trump is going to Make America Great Again.

    1. How many of you did Biden want or plan to put in camps?
How many of you did Biden put in camps?
How many of you had your essential government services…that kept you alive or educated removed for his convenience and entertainment?
So he could give to breaks to his billionaire buddies?
hmmm maybe, just maybe your hysteria about imaginary problems, was not the same as our -fear_of actual actions.
How nazi does Trump need to be for you to care?
Do you really believe his extremist allies will tolerate _you_?
You are the equivalent of a Black sharecropper voting for the KKK Kandidate because he promised to harm others physically and financially to your benefit.
      It boggles the mind.
The economy gets better under Democrats…so if you care about that why are you a Republican?
Stay safe please, because your allies would prefer you gone.
and weirdly those of us you dread…we want you alive, safe, warm ,free to live and meaningfully engage in society as an equal.

  4. @Jeffrey Liddell – Your response is full of contradictions and falsehoods. It dismisses the real harm caused by right-wing policies towards the LGBTQ+ (NOT THE LGB) community while claiming victimhood. The statement about the Trans community “having themselves to blame” for discrimination is both ignorant and hateful. You were once, not too long ago, told that you were less than, made to feel inferior, called “broken” and possibly told that you had “mental health” issues, yet today you use the exact same LOGIC and RHETORIC to demonize the LGBTQ+ Community, specifically (Non-Binary, Transgender) individuals. The claim that Trump “won the popular vote” is a blatant lie, and the suggestion that those who disagree should leave the country is hypocritical, as it promotes exclusion while claiming to support freedom. This rhetoric fuels division, not unity. Praying for you, Lord, forgive him, He knows now what he does, open his eyes and his heart Lord, show him the error of his ways.

  5. The MAGA Gay agenda contains numerous contradictions and harmful rhetoric. It downplays the real harm caused by right-wing policies, particularly toward the Transgender and Non-Binary communities. Yes, the HRC has every right to, and will continue to, be an ally for all LGBTQ+ members. Meanwhile, ironically, they accuse others of victimhood. The lie about Trump “winning the popular vote” and the call for people to leave the country if they disagree are hypocritical and divisive.

Be careful what you wish for, especially if you identify as white. If you had read a history book, you would understand the simple fact that before your ancestors came over on the Mayflower or immigrated to this country, before Christopher Columbus stepped onto Greenland and was falsely credited with discovering the Americas, my people were here in America—this great country (North America, Indigenous, not Indian people). Your ancestors committed hate, violence, and came to kill, steal, and destroy, much like Donald Trump does today. Please know that we will not be taken back to the days of slavery. You will not send us back to the cotton fields where white slave owners quoted from the Bible and whipped their slaves (who, by the way, they depended on for food, shelter, women, children, and culture).

Keep an eye out because the day is coming when the Conservatives, Evangelicals, Zionists, Homophobes, Xenophobes, Pro-Life (anti-abortion), Right Wing, MAGA, Trumpers, Tesla (#TESLA!!!) will all be struck down. Their agendas, power, influence, money, wealth, and social status will be no more. They will answer to my Lord, and if they don’t repent and get their hearts right before God, they will sadly hear Him say, “Depart from me, I never knew you, you worker of lawlessness!”

God bless. May God have mercy on you all.
