North Texas LGBTQ+ rights pioneer George Harris has died. He was 92 years old.

George Harris has died.
He entered hospice with the same attitude he had lived life: “I’m ready for what’s next!”
George and his husband of 53 years, the late Jack Evans, were the first couple to get married in Dallas County.
After having been imprisoned and fired for being gay, he led a lifetime of activism to improve the lives of LGBTQ people everywhere.
George and Jack touched almost every organization in Dallas in one way or another, and helped secure the history of Dallas through TheDallasWay.org.
George had a brilliant sense of humor, and his mission in life was to keep Lee Borchert’s life on track. George was a father figure to many “sons,” many of whom did not survive AIDS. He told me once that, acting as a notary, he had witnessed more wills of dying young men than anyone could imagine.

Jack and George were a blessing to all that knew them. They are our modern day hero’s! I was blessed to have them in my life in the early days of MCC (1980-1993 timeframe). I know George has now joined Jack in heaven. They, I’m sure are looking down on us and insisting we continue the fight for GLBTQA rights. May it be so.
George and Jack were our neighbors for years, living down the street from my husband and I. Both great guys, we revered the legacy they especially for us as a new couple serving as unofficial mentors of what successful unions are supposed to look like. He will be missed…🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😢😢😢
His and Jack’s memories will continue to be blessings to all they stood up for. Don’t give up the fight
