Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern
Right Wing Watch reports that Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern has doubled down on her claim, first made in 2008, that homosexuality poses a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorism. Here’s RWW’s transcript of Kern’s remarks during an Aug. 31 interview with Peter LaBarbera of the hate group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality:
You know if you just look at it in practical terms, which has destroyed and ended the life of more people? Terrorism attack here in America or HIV/AIDS? In the last twenty years, fifteen to twenty years, we’ve had maybe three terrorist attacks on our soil with a little over 5,000 people regrettably losing their lives. In the same time frame, there have been hundreds of thousands who have died because of having AIDS. So which one’s the biggest threat? And you know, every day our young people, adults too, but especially our young people, are bombarded at school, in movies, in music, on TV, in the mall, in magazines, they’re bombarded with ‘homosexuality is normal and natural.’ It’s something they have to deal with every day. Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day, and that’s what I mean. …
It’s more dangerous, and yes I think that it’s also more dangerous because it will tear down the moral fiber of this nation. We were founded as a nation upon the principles of religion and morality, if we take those out from under our society we will lose what has made us a great nation, we will no longer be a virtuous people, which we see happening already. And without virtue this nation will not survive.

Yes, John, that’s exactly the point that some of us are attempting to make in reference to Ms. Kern’s bigoted perspective. She makes use of tired stereotypes in order to whip-up emotional responses from OK voters who dwell on the dark side. I have to wonder if she even knows who the gay people are in her own family history. I feel very sorry for any young gay or lesbian person in her family.

Anyone who typically makes homophobic remarks or takes a strong homophobic stance is generally doing so to hide and/or mask their own homosexuality. I submit that Ms. Kern might be homosexual herself, as I submit that those who have defended her in this forum likely are as well. It simply goes to pattern. SO, Ms. Kern, John and Bob, you’re better off to face it, admit it, own up to it and deal with it. Otherwise, you will continue to remain very unhappy human beings–like you are now.

Yeah, guys, why so SENSITIVE? I mean people are only defining you as a negative entity based on how you/ who you love. No big deal, right? As Cody mentioned before many straight people are afflicted with HIV/AIDS as well as gays. Diseases are not prejudice. And John, what is natural to one may not be for another. Why should an engineer strive to find fault in an artist? I thought people stopped obsessing about how you/who you had sex with when you got out of highschool. Diversity in humans is what makes this country, and world, beautiful.
No, John, we are very much better than Sally. When bigoted people demean and attack us, we simply respond. It’s a form of defense. The idea that we are being too “sensitive” is rubbish. Sally insists that we are more dangerous than terrorists simply because of our sexual orientation. This is not only absurd. It’s defamatory, vicious, and stupid.
