The story of North Haven Gardens goes back more than 70 years to 1951 when Ralph and Muriel Pinkus founded the business as a small nursery on what was then just open grassland along Northaven Road. The North Haven story wound its way into the early 1970s when the founders’ two sons, Jon and David joined the family business, then into 1992 when David Pinkus left, and all the way up to September 2013 when Ralph Pinkus passed away.
Even the death of the founder couldn’t stop North Haven Gardens’ story. But a natural disaster almost did: On Sunday night, Oct. 22, 2019, an EF-3 tornado with winds up to 140 mph cut a swatch of destruction across North Dallas, and North Haven Gardens caught the near full force of the storm’s fury. The nursery’s buildings did not make it through the storm, but its spirit definitely did — as did the greenhouses and more of the plants and ornamental items than you might expect.
The North Haven Gardens family and staff pledged to rebuild, and they did exactly that. By Nov. 25 — one month and three days after the devastating storm, the nursery was back open for business. And as it’s RVA for Best Garden Supply/Nursery will attest, it is still going strong and still a favorite of the LGBTQ community and beyond.
It’s more than just the bountiful assortment of plants and gardening supplies that keeps the customers coming back to North Haven. The nursery offers a wide variety of educational resources and programs ranging from a blog to a video library, from a garden coach service to a landscape concierge service. There’s also a shop with unique decorative items, the Ralph and Rose Boutique and Café and, of course, the friendly and helpful staff.
