The SPCA of Texas, a nonprofit animal welfare organization that has been around since 1938, is dedicated to providing every animal exceptional care and a loving home — whether that means finding adoptive homes or foster homes for animals of all kinds or working with law enforcement to identify instances of animal abuse or neglect and get those animals to safety. And we’re not just talking dogs and cats, either! SPCA rescues and finds homes for animals from hamsters to horses and everything in between. SPCA’s programs also include disaster support, a clinic, a pharmacy, a mobile wellness unit, spay/neuter services and more.

We here at Dallas Voice are proud to have partnered with SPCA for many years now, working to find adoptive homes for numerous precious pets. This week’s Pet of the Week, in fact, is Creamsicle is a 5-year-old domestic shorthair mix who came to the SPCA of Texas as a Dallas County stray, and has been thriving in foster care ever since. If you think Dreamsicle is the cat for you, contact the foster team (foster@spca.org) for details. You can browse thru the organizations available animals at SPCA.org/FindAPet and visit SPCA.org/DogAdopt to inquire about a dog or SPCA.org/CatAdopt to inquire about a cat.

Oh, and don’t forget that the SPCA’s fundraiser, Strut Your Mutt: The Race to end Animal Cruelty, is coming to Fair Park on April 15. Visit SPCA.org for information on how to participate.

Isla Veterinary Boutique is “not your typical veterinary hospital,” Dr. Josh Sanabria declares proudly. “We’re going to elevate that experience.”
“Dr. Josh” is Puerto Rican, and when he came to Dallas — by way of Las Vegas and then San Diego — after graduating veterinary school, he was determined to realize his dream of owning his own veterinary hospital. But he was also determined that his hospital would be somewhere that both pets and their owners would find, he says, not just state of the art technology but a caring and compassionate staff dedicated to providing the best possible care.

But it’s not just technology that sets Isla Veterinary Boutique apart; from the minute you walk in the door, you know this place is special. From the beautiful, soothing colors on the walls to the little touches here and there designed to keep even the most nervous fur baby or anxious pet parent as calm as possible — think a separate entrance and waiting room for cats who are not accustomed to being around dogs, especially nervous, rowdy dogs — there’s no doubt Dr. Josh has accomplished his goal of elevating the experience of a trip to the vet.

And then, of course, there is Dr. Josh himself. With his big smile and obvious and sincere concern for each and every pet, he can put anyone at ease. And he’s not there just to give your pet a shot or a pill and send you on your way. Dr. Josh wants to educate his patients’ parents on how to keep their pets healthy, happy and safe. That’s one reason he writes a monthly column on pet health for Dallas Voice. Watch for WOOF! Dr. Josh Talks Animals in Dallas Voice on the first Friday of every month.
Dr. Josh is no ordinary veterinarian — “I am brown. I am gay. I am short. I am Puerto Rican. And I am very, very proud of all that,” he says in a Bank of America Small Business Owner Spotlight video on YouTube — and Isla Veterinary Boutique is no ordinary animal hospital. Because who wants to settle for ordinary when it comes to your beloved fur babies?
