Torrential rain cut short a marriage equality celebration at Legacy of Love Monument on Friday evening, June 26.
The evening’s event began at 6 p.m. at Cathedral of Hope. About 2,000 people packed the church to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that brought marriage equality to Texas.
Two couples married with more than a dozen pastors from a variety of denominations looking on. The Rev. Neil Cazares-Thomas presided and choked up over the words “by the power vested in me by the state of Texas.” The audience cheered as he said the words and gave a bigger cheer as he said, “And by the U.S. Constitution.” Those were words repeated many times today in courtrooms in Dallas that evoked emotion.
After cheering a number of speakers ihncluding County Commissioner Theresa Daniel, Resource Center CEO Cece Cox and Judge Dennise Garcia, who married Jack Evans and George Harris, a couple who have been together for 54 years, most people marched from the church down Cedar Springs Road.
Close to 1,000 people gathered around the monument to hear speakers, cheer and celebrate until the rain cut the event short.
