The Women’s Communities Association will hold its sixth annual Women’s Day Celebration Sunday, March 10, starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Women’s Museum, 3800 Parry St. at Exposition in Fair Park. Entry to the museum is at gate two.

Admission to the event and parking are free.

This year’s celebration will feature the presentation of the Words of Women Essay of the Year award to Dallas resident Judith-ann Anderson. Last year’s winner, Mary Franklin, and other previous winners including Noor Saldeh, Mary Hardgrove and Safia Meek will attend.

Linda Vozzella, 2008 Woman of the Year, will also be honored during the celebration.

Speakers and guests include former Dallas City Councilwoman Veletta Lill, Dallas City Councilwoman Elba Garcia, human rights advocate Tina Patterson of Washington, D.C., Agnes Ndetei from Kenya, Sharefa Daw from Burma, Dawn Letson with the Women’s Collection at Texas Woman’s University, and local feminist celebrities Vivian Castleberry and Ginny Whitehill.

Representatives from Peacemakers, Catholic Charities, Migration and Refugee Services, UNA-USA, Dallas Chapter, Committee on Refugees, Business and Professional Women, Women’s Issues Network, Words of Women, Women’s Communities Association and the Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future also will participate.

Cultural displays and information booths will be a new addition to the celebration this year amd will include Augusta Ekong’s Out of Africa Village, a Girl Scout cookie booth, local artists and designers, the DFW International Community Alliance, Business and Professional Women, the Dallas Women’s Coalition, Peacemakers,Church Women United,the Women’s Southwest Federal Credit Union, Green Mountain Energy, WCA, Words of Women and others.

Refreshments will include Nigerian food by Augusta Ekong.

This year marks the 97th anniversary of International Women’s Day, which was created by Clara Zetkin and others to remember the victims most of whom were woman of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire which occurred at the beginning of the 20th Century and to honor working women everywhere.
