Deborah returns to Dallas — this time as a married lady

Locals fell in love with Deborah Vial when she mixed rock and soul at regular gigs in Dallas for years, mostly at the old Sue Ellen’s. Although Vial lives in Hawaii, she’s returns regularly to stay connected to those fans. And this time, she comes back, herself more in love than ever — with her wife.

"I married my partner of 11 years in Washington, D.C., almost a month ago. It is spring, the marrying season," Vial says.

Singing is Vial’s career but her passion for it is now being shared not only with her partner, but also her goal for Hawaii to get on board with same-sex marriage. Last month, the state’s legislature approved a bill for civil unions providing equal rights for all married couples. The future of that bill now lies in the hands of Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican. And this is a hot topic for Vial.

"We have been trying to help pass the civil unions bills here in Hawaii," she says." "We will know by July 5. My partner is having some peeps from HRC [come] out to the show because the whole gay marriage issue is hot on our agenda." •
