A poll released Wednesday by Public Policy Polling shows that a majority of Republicans nationwide — 51 percent — now support either marriage or civil unions for same-sex couples. As Public Policy Polling notes in a blog post about the results, the percentage of Republicans who support same-sex relationship recognition is higher than the percentage — 45 percent — who approve of DOMA-loving House Speaker John Boehner’s job performance. Unfortunately, in the region identified as the South, which presumably includes Texas, 55 percent of Republicans still oppose any form of relationship recognition. And among self-identified Tea Party voters, 57 percent oppose relationship recognition. Which probably explains two-timin’ Tom Leppert’s decision to come out against both marriage and civil unions on his Senate campaign website. Speaking of that, here’s our latest idea for a Leppert campaign slogan: “I may have had a gay chief of staff as Dallas mayor, but by God he was single!” If that leads to follow-up questions, Leppert can simply say it was before he gained the courage to be open and honest about his tea-bagging.
Opportunist is the best description of Tom Leppert. He will say or do anything to get what he wants. Oh yes, that is also the definition of a Republican!

Well, way to go, Harvey! Please tell the–now–majority, 51% of Republicans that are on your side and mine what awful people they are! That’ll show ’em!
Good grief, guy. Please promise me you will never assume any real position of leadership where you are entrusted with substantively advancing our cause. Bomb-throwing, blanket statements (which GLBT folks just tend to love, right?), irrational hatred and anger — these are best saved for the obscurity of website comments and blogs. Leave it to others to do the real work, those who get the fact that change will only come by converting our opponents; not by alienating and vilifying them.
You know, Leppert brings a good idea. So I guess be cool with single Gay People, well I guess If I’m ever going to get that Boyfriend, and hate people that are together, which makes me mad? Good Job Leppert!
Also – John, why not simply headline the article with “National Poll: 51% of Republicans Now Support Marriage Equality or Civil Unions”? I’m just fine with trashing Leppert; he deserves every bit of criticism he’s gotten since his run for Senate. But is that the real news you’re writing about in your article? The news is actually positive, showing a welcome shift on GLBT Equality amongst Republicans…but instead, the article opens and closes as a negative on one, singular Republican who doesn’t have anything specifically to do with this poll, thereby detracting from the very good, real news you’ve brought to light. Maybe I’m missing something, but just some food for thought.
