Legendary DJ Spinderella brings old-school grooves to Big D

As the stunning DJ behind Salt-N-Pepa, Deidra “Spinderella” Jones spent the ’80s performing for audiences around the globe. But check her 2007 June calendar, and you’ll notice her crisscrossing the U.S., spinning at numerous Pride events: Los Angeles Black Pride and Seattle’s Girl4Girl. She also regularly helms the decks at Hollywood’s lesbian go-go hotspot Michelle’s XXX. And this weekend she’s in Dallas.
Though not gay, Spinderella’s role as a hip-hop pioneer earns much love from the ladies. And by kicking out sassy anthems like “Push It,” “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “Shoop” and “None of Your Business,” it’s safe to say that Spinderella helped liberate sexual attitudes for Gen X.
Today, she’s a much-in-demand turntable mistress for parties hosted by (gaydar alert) celebrities: Queen Latifah and Carl Lewis. Even Ellen DeGeneres is hip, hiring Spin for her talk show numerous times.
Spinderella is also a radio personality. Until recently, she held down the drive-time shift at Los Angeles’ 100.3 “The Beat.” Now, along with co-host DJ Mo’Dav, she hosts “The Backspin,” a syndicated programs that mixes old-school hip-hop, R&B, soul and other “classics for that ass.”
In keeping with the Pride month flavor, proceeds from her gig at Minc Lounge on Saturday will benefit the Human Rights Campaign. So bring your ’80s nostalgia to catch the legend. Your ass will thank you.
