If you’re a culture junkie, you probably already know that South By Southwest will be taking over Downtown Austin from March 8–17. But if you forgot about it, there’s still time to plan a trip.

A festival of live music, film premieres, tech innovations and speakers, SXSW has grown over more than three decades from a lazy bar-based chill fest to a seismic preview of what to expect for the rest of the year. Last year’s fest included world premieres of Ready Player One, A Quiet Place, Hereditary, TransMilitary and 1985, a recreation of Westworld’s Sweetwater town, appearances by Spike Lee, Elon Musk, Steven Spielberg and Mark Hamill.

This year promises more big moments. Among them: A seminar called Trans Resilience on the status of trans liberation; a cooking demo from chef Tim Love; an LGBTQ meet-up; and a screening of Jordan Peele’s new film Us … and that’s just the first day. There are also new films from Robert Rodriguez, Harmony Korine, Joe Bob Briggs, and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman; musical performances in two dozen genres; and tons more. Visit SXSW.com for the full lin-up, or download the app, and I’ll be down there reporting on everything, so follow me on social media @CriticalMassTx.
