Emily “Spicybrown” Sanchez ran for U.S. Senate on the Green Party.
On the party’s website, Sanchez explains she thought of the nickname in the grocery store.
“I’m brown, I’m spicy,” she said. “People tell me my poetry was spicy.”
Sanchez is a physical therapist assistant and a slam poet. She had no money to stage credible a statewide race, so she used the nickname to get attention.
Apparently, it worked. In Dallas County, she received more than 3,000 votes.
