Winning Star Search in 1983 propelled his career first as a singer and then an actor and Broadway star starring in productions of The Producers and The First Wives Club. He married his partner of 14 years in 2008 months after adopting their son Cooper. In 2010, Harris recorded “My Reclamation,” an anthem for marriage equality.
