“‘Safe Sex in the City’ theme will be stressed in workshops, parties, worship services
Educational workshops, parties, worship services and more will highlight this year’s Dallas Southern Pride, which runs Thursday, Sep. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30.
The event, formerly known as Dallas Black Pride, is roughly 10 years old, said Dallas Southern Pride chair Roy Murray, adding that it is designed to promote education and awareness in the LGBT African-American community.
The theme of this year’s event is “Safe Sex in the City.”
“This year we’re really focusing on safe sex because in our community, for some reason, the newer cases of HIV infection are disproportionate to our population, so because of that you have to look to your leaders to try and educate,” Murray said.
Murray said he expects the event to draw more than 10,000 participants from around the country.
“This is the biggest event in our community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” Moore said. “It should be the biggest ever. We’ve done more marketing this year.”
Dallas Southern Pride will be based at the Doubletree Hotel, 8250 N. Central Expressway. It kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday with a private party at the hotel, followed by a jump off show and party at Havana, 4006 Cedar Springs Road.
On Friday, there will be a Fire & Ice Party at the Doubletree Hotel.
Saturday will feature a series of workshops covering everything from workplace discrimination to finances to women’s issues to sexually transmitted diseases.
Sunday will include a gospel/jazz brunch followed by worship services and a shopping outing at North Park Mall.
There also will be free HIV/STD testing during the weekend.
