OK, Mickey Rourke was good in “The Wrestler,” but nothing compared to Sean Penn, who lost the only nomination “Milk” received at the Golden Globe awards. (Not to worry: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association got it wrong, and “Milk” is sure to be a major Oscar contender.) Despite the oversight, there were some gay connections at the awards:
Anna Paquin won best actress in a drama series for “True Blood,” the sexy HBO series from gay creator Alan Ball.
Best motion picture comedy went to the ho-hum Woody Allen film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” which included a bisexual subplot. Kate Winslet won her supporting actress in a motion picture award for “The Reader,” from bisexual director Stephen Daldry.
Fair and full disclosure: The daughter of Rourke’s character in “The Wrestler” is lesbian.
Gay icon Heath Ledger won an expected award for his charismatic performance in “The Dark Knight.” The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, gave a very dignified acceptance speech. Gay fave Laura Linney followed up her Emmy with a Golden Globe for playing Abigail Adams in the miniseries “John Adams.”
The great gay-friendly TV series “30 Rock” won best comedy series, actor in a comedy (Alec Baldwin) and actress in a comedy (series creator Tina Fey).
