Sheriff Valdez, a lesbian, will tell the story of her personal journey of faith as part of the church’s Cinco de Mayo observance.

The sheriff is a former member and former board member at Cathedral of Hope, who “has been and continues to be a faithful Christian working for peace and justice,” said the Rev. Jo Hudson, rector of the cathedral.
Valdez has been in law enforcement for more than 24 years.

She is one of eight children born to parents who were migrant farm workers. Raised in San Antonio, Valdez worked in the fields as a youth, often working two jobs to pay for her college education.

Sheriff Valdez has a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While already working in law enforcement, she earned her master’s degree in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Texas at Arlington.
