Sir Sweeney Barbershop and Lounge queers up Victory Park

You may not hear any Stephen Sondheim coming from the speakers when you settle into your chair, but once you’re done at Sir Sweeney Barbershop and Lounge, you’re going to want to give your barber a standing ovation.

The luxury men’s barbershop made its debut in February, and it was an instant hit. When I visited in April for a full slate of pampering services, every station was occupied, and the small lobby area provided a lounging space for additional customers who’d arrived early for their scheduled appointments. Perhaps it’s because they knew they’d be treated to delicious, locally sourced pressed fruit and vegetable juices or coffee drinks while they waited. Or maybe, like me, they are fascinated watching so many skilled stylists work their follicular magic like less awkward Edward Scissorhandseses.

Of the six barbers on staff, three identify as LGBTQ, including co-founder, manager and barber Jeff Adams.

“The idea came from wanting to establish a standard for a luxury men’s barbershop that prioritizes the physical and mental well-being of both our patrons and the barbers,” Adams explains, adding that the idea was first discussed back in 2021.

Having been in the barbershop industry for more than 10 years, Adams has helped open and manage shops where the barbershop culture was not ideal for everyone who stepped through their doors.

So, he and his two co-founders, Omer Hameed and Amir Didarali, set out to create a brand where they take their work seriously but still want people to have fun.

“The inspiration is a combination of a few things. We wanted a name that represented the sophistication, the utmost respect and professionalism from our barbers (sir) and towards our patrons (sir). Everyone is a sir at Sir Sweeney,” he says. “Sweeney is an homage to the iconic fictional barber Sweeney Todd, from the famous musical and later film, who was one of the most notorious barbers of his time.”

Thankfully, you can’t order any cannibalistic confections here.

What you will find on the menu (in addition to the aforementioned drinks) is a full roster of services aimed at making men look and feel their very best. On my visit, they invited me to try the Gold

Package, which includes an intense scalp treatment, haircut, beard trim or shave, brow, nose and ear wax, an express facial and a quick “Menicure.” For $199, it’s a real value for a two-hour indulgence.

Even though their services are geared toward men, anyone can get a cut at Sir Sweeney. “We are inclusive and welcome all who would like to elevate their grooming experience,” Adams says.

In Dallas and cities across the nation, supporting queer-owned businesses has a more urgent importance than ever. “It helps empower the LGBTQ community and promotes visibility and inclusivity.

In our barbershop, we are committed to creating a luxurious, welcoming space for everyone while celebrating our queer identity,” he says. “When you support places like ours, you’re not only helping us thrive but also backing a diverse and welcoming space where everyone feels valued. Plus, it strengthens the community’s economy and supports advocacy for positive change. Your support really makes a difference.”
