On Nov. 2, Oklahomans voted on a proposition that made Sharia law illegal in the state.
The proposition reads:
This measure amends the State Constitution. It changes a section that deals with the courts of this state. It would amend Article 7, Section 1. It makes courts rely on federal and state law when deciding cases. It forbids courts from considering or using international law. It forbids courts from considering or using Sharia Law.
International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and independent nations, such as countries, states and tribes. It deals with their relationship with each other. It also deals with some of their relationships with persons.
The law of nations is formed by the general assent of civilized nations. Sources of international law also include international agreements, as well as treaties.
Sharia Law is Islamic law. It is based on two principal sources, the Koran and the teaching of Mohammed.
What most Oklahomans undoubtedly fail to realize is that the Ten Commandments are part of Sharia law, so their 70 percent vote to outlaw Sharia also outlawed the Ten Commandments.
A number of groups have already filed challenges based on the First Amendment prohibition on any law “respecting an establishment of religion” or impeding the free exercise of religion.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he would like a similar federal law.
The goal, according to the measure’s Republican sponsor, Rex Duncan, was a pre-emptive strike to stop liberal judges from undermining the principles upon which America is based.
Maybe Duncan thinks judges are ruling in favor of same-sex marriage and ending discrimination because that’s what Sharia law requires?
Actually, that would be Israeli law that recognizes same-sex marriage, offers partner benefits and allows — no, insists — that its LGBT citizens serve in the military. So maybe they need to be taking the Judeo out of their Judeo-Christian teachings and reconsider the Sharia thing. Under Sharia law, Uganda is again talking about passing its “kill the gays” bill. And it seems this would fit nicely into Oklahoma politics.
And while killing those pesky Ten Commandments was probably not the goal of 70 percent of the state’s voters, it doesn’t matter what the intent was, it matters what the law says. While murder is covered by other state laws, there is no word on whether belief in one God (No. 2), remembering the Sabbath (No. 5) and keeping it holy, or honoring your parents (No. 6) will be punished, or if sale of cameras will be discontinued (graven images, No. 3).
I find it hard to know what to say about such imbecility. So I’ll just say…
Good Lord!
That should be sufficiently offensive.
Sharia law allows the beating of women to save family honor. It should be banned world wide. Enough said. To defend it in any way means YOU SUPPORT the abuse of children and women.
I am pretty sure that David — who is Jewish, by the way — was NOT defending Sharia law in any form or fashion. His point, I think, was to point out that certain politicians put a totally useless and unnecessary proposal on the ballot intended to rile up a certain segment of the population and drive them to the polls on Election Day, and that 70 percent of the people of Oklahoma cast a knee-jerk vote against the “evil Muslims” without realizing what they were actually voting for or against. And as a result, they voted to outlaw The 10 Commandments.
Sharia Law is, in my understanding, is more religion than civil law, and I personally believe that no religious beliefs should be enshrined in civil law.
Just my 2 cents.
I believe beating women to save the family honor is already illegal in most places.
Of course no religious law should be enshrined in any part of American law. That’s why we have the First Amendment. But to vote on a part of other people’s religions is as offensive as it is illegal.
But what makes this proposition so delicious is the ignorance behind it. Because this conservative legislator doesn’t like it, he says he’s afraid liberal judges will use it. There’s nothing liberal about Sharia law. It actually fits with his narrow minded thinking much closer than it does with liberal ideology.
But what’s so special is that the Ten Commandments are part of Sharia law and are now illegal in Oklahoma. They never were the law, but the contents of them have been made illegal by this vote. So technically observing the Sabbath in Oklahoma is now illegal.
My point is, I hope the bigots who voted for this get exactly what they deserve. And I hope some liberal groups sue some churches for observing the Sabbath or believing in one God. And now, not only is it immoral for a preacher to covet his neighbor’s wife, it’s downright illegal.
AAAND … to make sure Oklahoma judges are NOT following Sharia, it might be incumbent upon the state to hire Muslim clerics to review court rulings to make sure that those rulings are not based on Sharia law in any way. Because what’s important is what they actually voted on … not what the intent was. If the intent was to outlaw beating women to preserve family honor, that’s what the proposition should have said. And obviously, the bigots who proposed this law aren’t the ones to determine what Sharia law is. Muslim clerics are.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
The Romans had it right. Let’s build a colisseum and buy some lions.
In the last paragraph of the article the author quotes some of the 10 commandments but has anyone else noticed that he has quoted them wrong??? No 1. You shall have no other Gods before me (Not No. 2 which is You will not make for yourself an idol) No 4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy (Not No. 5 which is honor thy father and thy mother)
No 5. Honor thy father and Mother (Not No 6 which is you shall not commit murder)
No 2. You will not make for yourself an Idol. (Not No. 3 which is you shall not take the Lords name in vein) It was a good attempt but I think this article would be more if the author got all his facts straight.
Monica
Torture is also illegal, in the U.S., and actually quite rare … so Israel has some catch-up to do.
I believe the author misquoted the bible because this article was not written in Hebrew.
Right you are, Jon, but the Ten Commandments, as written in Sharia law, probably would have been written in Arabic, so that muddles the entire thing.
And, Des, I was only referring to Israel as far as LGBT rights goes and how mistaken right-wingers are when they refer to the Judeo part of Judeo-Christian in regard to LGBT rights.
So would this law affect whether Oklahoma would recognize tribal law? Depending on how it is worded, it could have a huge impact on Native American communities in the state.
Perhaps ALL forms of religious laws should be banned… the Kosher Laws of Judaism and The Romas Catholic Code of Canon Law, the Methodist Book of Discipline, the LDS Church’s Doctrine & Covenants…..hey wait almost all religions have law codes.
Send muslims back to their country if they want to practice sharia law. Then once they have gotten rid of their women, they can then figure out how they will have kids since there will be no women. I think the men there should be beheaded if they attack a woman. If they rape a woman, their penis should be chopped off and cut in many pieces and fed to the animals. They are only allowed 1 wife and if they are caught cheating, the wife has the right to divorce him and take all assets. What makes the man so special. Can he reproduce—NO, is he the only one capable of working an providing for the family–NO. I bet if we lined up qualifications, women are even except that we can have babies and they can’t, therefore I think we should be revered.
The 10 Commandments have already been outlawed from the courtrooms in the US.
Ha ha ha ha ha LOL ROTFLMAO!!!! Rednecks, how freaking stupid! I suppose this is why rednecks are considered to be “Stupid”. They don’t think anything through just plain gut reactions founded on the scare tactics of a Far right CONservative con artist party. That said, DUMP the ten commandments (intentionally not capitalized) since there is not such thing as the ten, if there is show me the originals!
Deuteronomy 22:22 “If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die.” Leviticus 20:10 “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife–with the wife of his neighbor–both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.”
Leviticus 21:9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.” Deuteronomy 25:11-12 “If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.”
Hey Monica
There are two versions of the ten commandments in the bible
Hence your confusion
I can’t stand any of you religious people anymore. Go and have your stupid holy war already and leave me out of it!
Do I am reading political, sciences, deeds of people towards the TEN COMMANDMENTS? Stay where you are , believe what you believe. What other people do ITS their deeds. Don’t get angry don’t get hate… no one born is cleaned.
Satire is always misinterpreted by those who are already clouded by preconceived notions. Wonderful entry. I appreciate your thoughts!
If enough people chastise, mock, or just frown on religion, it will go away.
To paraphrase ‘JulesManson’:
If enough people chastise, mock, or just frown on religion – And Politics – they will go away.
It is sad that I am trying to find something on the 10 commandments and I come up with this… Why don’t they just appoint a church court, individuals can decide if they want to be judged by the church ALSO (can’t get out of being judged by the courts)… and when no one is ever in the church courts because they find out they can be stoned/shunned/or committed to going to hell…. they can get rid of the foolishness known as religion and courts living together.
There are not enough god fearing people in the court systems, or government to have the bible, or any other religious affiliation to be taken seriously. This is why it has been taken out. Separation of church and state is based on the fact that no one wants to be judged for who they are, they would rather hide behind closed doors and be voted in by blind people who hear what they as politicians say, but don’t know that 80% of people are criminals and 80% of people are christian. Somewhere along there, there are criminals hiding behind religion. Go figure.
(just my $.02)
Karen suggests sending all Muslims back to their countries.
Fine.
To which country do we deport Muslims who are American citizens, Karen?
that suggestion is as ignorant as saying “send all monogamists” or “Christians” or “Jews” back to “their” country — when they’re IN “their country.”
Of course, there’s not only no shortage of sheer ignorance around; there is an overflowing abundance of it.
Besides, what are you gonna do about the ORIGINAL people who maintain their forefathers’ religious beliefs, Karen? — you know, um, NATIVE AMERICANS?
Lots of them would, no doubt, be happy to see you hit the road in any direction: north, south, east, west, just so long as you got out. Unless you’re a Native American yourself, but, somehow, I find that possibility highly unlikely, based on your comment. And “Karen” doesn’t sound too “Indian” either.
Kurt, you do realize that the Indians that were ‘native’ to America came over the straights from Asia into America, right? Who is supposed to kick them out? Just wondering. If you’re going to pull the ‘rediculous’ we weren’t here first rule… go all the way with it.
All I would recommend is getting rid of the non-Americans that insist on living here because it’s a better living for them. yet, they refuse to be part of America claiming to be ‘african-american’… asian-american… Muslim-American… etc… get rid of the damned hyphen and be American… It’s un-American to do otherwise.
Fred, I do indeed know that the original Americvans crossed over the Bering Strait to North America and then gradually spread southward, just as I’m aware that many scientists believe that humanity itself started in Africa then spread from there — meaning every place on Earth was human-free until humans arrived from elsewhere. In that context, I suppose only people living in the area where humans first developed (if that precise spot could be found) could claim to be “natives.” The rest of us are immigrants from *somewhere.
My point, as you know, is that none of us descended from Europeans have claims that pre-date those of Native Americvans — “Indians.” Also, Native Americans WERE the original people here, wherever they came from. They beat the rest of us by thousands of years. Well over a millenium, in fact Regarding “Hyphenated Americans,” just yesterday or day before I elsewhere spoke out in another online forum like this one strongly against that practice of hyphenating one’s identity — as I have been doing for years. Further, I believe that if someone INSISTS on using such an identification, then it should read “American-Mexican,” “American-Chinese,” “American-Irish,” etc., with the emphasis on “American.” we’re singing in the same choir on that point, Fred.
dude get serious
need to talk a lot better
Actually only 3 of the ten commandments are
enforcable laws in the US. stealing killing
and lying in court. otherwise you can covet,
not go to church, build you an idle, bad mouth
your parents, cuss etc. all you want.
how come this is the 11 commandements isnt it meant to be 10 ?
