Republican says government shouldn’t protect people from consequences of promiscuity
DENVER — The Senate has backed a bill requiring HIV testing for pregnant women over the objection of one Republican senator.
Sen. Dave Schultheis of Colorado Springs said Wednesday, Feb. 25 the government shouldn’t protect people from the consequences of sexual promiscuity.
Democratic Sen. Jennifer Veiga, who is lesbian, said she was offended by the remarks. She thought they reinforced stereotypes about gay people being sexually promiscuous.
The measure (Senate Bill 179) would require women to be tested in their first trimester. Democratic Sen. Lois Tochtrop said the goal is to treat babies before birth to prevent them from contracting the disease.
The Senate backed the bill in a 32-1 vote, sending it to the House.
