SEGAL’S GAY ICONS

George Segal is generally credited with creating the first permanent piece of public art related to gay rights. His white bronze work called "Gay Liberation," in Sheridan Square in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, has been on display since 1980. It depicts two men and two women interacting, apparently in solidarity following the trauma of the Stonewall Riots. Sheridan Square is located adjacent to the Stonewall Inn, where the modern gay rights movement is often traced.
