Houston Transgender Unity Committee will present 2 scholarships to transgender college students at banquet scheduled for April

The deadline for applications for the first Peggy Rudd Transgender Scholarship is set for Feb. 14, according to officials with the Houston Transgender Unity Committee, which is sponsoring the scholarship.

Transgender Unity will award two scholarships one for $500 and one for $250 at the Transgender Unity Banquet on April 15.

Transgender people who are attending or will attend accredited institutions of higher learning are eligible for the scholarships. Applications are available online at www.houstontransgenderunity.org.

Scholarship applicants can send questions to info@houstontransgenderunity.org.

The Houston Transgender Unity Committee formed in 1999 to help bridge the gap between organizations representing transgenders in the Houston area, to promote unity in the GLBT community, to educate the public on transgender issues and advocate for transgender rights, according to Brenda Thomas, Unity Committee executive director.

Representatives from six Houston-area transgender groups service on the committee, and Josephine Tittsworth is committee co-chair.

Tickets are also available for the Transgender Unity Banquet at the organization’s Web site and at Jewel’s Crossdressers’ Boutique, 2404 Taft St. in Houston or by mail at P.O. Box 542287, Houston, Texas 77254. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door.
