10-session program is part of RCD’s partnership with SMU’s Center for Family Counseling; participation restricted to transgender community

The Resource Center of Dallas will launch a transgender group counseling program on Thursday, March 5, and the 10-session group will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the first, second and third Thursdays of each month. Cost is $10 per session, and membership is limited to those in the trans community.

Advance registration is required. To join, call Marla Compton at 214-528-0144 or e-mail her at mcompton@rcdallas.org.

The group will focus on helping members set realistic life goals for education, career, and relationships. It will also help each member explore gender identity issues and live more comfortably within their identities.

Resource Center of Dallas also offers a variety of other programs and services for the transgender community, including Gender Education, Advocacy & Resources (GEAR), which was created as a program of the center in 2005, and is the first formalized transgender program sponsored by a major LGBT organization in North Texas.

GEAR holds a transgender health night the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Nelson-Tebedo Health Resource Center, 4012 Cedar Springs Road, a monthly mixer the last Thursday of each month, and a transgender helpline the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

The transgender group counseling program is the latest expansion of a partnership that began last fall between Resource Center of Dallas and SMU’s Center for Family Counseling to offer low-cost mental health counseling for the Oak Lawn community.
