Resource Center dedicated its health campus this afternoon (Tuesday, Nov. 15) after a $600,000 makeover of its Reagan Street property.
The food pantry, hot meals program, insurance program and case management as well as its new counseling program will be located at the former Resource Center headquarters.
This completes work from an $8.7 million capital campaign, one of the largest ever attempted by an LGBT organization. With the opening of its new community center on Cedar Springs Road at Inwood Road, Resource Center is one of the few community centers in the country with multiple properties.
County Judge Clay Jenkins, commissioners Elba Garcia and Theresa Daniel, Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zach Thompson, DISD board member Miguel Solis and former City Councilwoman Veletta Lill were on hand for the event. Penny Pickle Crispin spoke, telling the story of how Resource Center got into the healthcare business when she administered pentamidine mist treatments to prevent pneumocystis pneumonia. Because the drug wasn’t indicated for prevention of the illness, Parkland Hospital wouldn’t perform the treatment that kept hundreds of people alive.
