No matter what you think of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, you have to admire the way he sticks to what he believes no matter what reaction he gets from the audience. And you have to wonder what the Republicans who attend these debates are thinking.
In Monday night’s debate in South Carolina sponsored by Fox News, Paul said the U.S. should use the Golden Rule in its foreign policy.
“Don’t do to other nations what we don’t want them to do to us,” Paul said. “We endlessly bomb these countries and we wonder why they get upset with us.”
The audience did cheer, however, when Paul said we don’t need another war. He said we need to quit the ones we’re in and bring home the troops.
Audience reaction has at times been just as interesting in the debates as anything the GOP candidates have said. Audiences have booed a gay Iraq war veteran, cheered Gov. Rick Perry’s execution record, etc.
Below is video of last night’s audience booing Paul as he talks about using the Golden Rule to guide foreign policy:
…and today”s Dallas Morning News reported that Ron Paul, deficit hawk, has spent $51,972 on First Class flights btw DC and Houston. That’s more than twice the cost of flying Coach. And that’s our tax money at work and play.
It gets worse, Phyllis: I heard that Ron Paul’s car contains foreign parts! It’s also said that he shamelessly asks for seconds in the congressional dining rooms and that when he shops at Safeway he almost never chooses the cheaper store brands. We had better vote for someone else to protect the nation from his wasteful liberalosity.
Phyllis… he sent over $141,000 back to the the taxpayers every year because he didn’t believe in taking the money from the treasury. If your only argument is that he flies first class, you’re a retard. The article also stated that he ONLY BOOKS COACH TICKETS, and gets upgraded to 1st class because of frequent flyer miles. Meaning… HE DID NOT PURCHASE THE 1ST CLASS PRICE. And even if he did, that’s over a 2 year period. 25k a year spent, vs. 141k alone in one move by sending money back to the treasury. He also refuses his 100k a year pension as a congressman, and if elected president would cut his salary to 37k a year. Please… your argument is disgusting, misinformed, and ludicrous. You can’t paint him as anything but a fiscal conservative.
Ron Paul bought First Class tickets because they are refundable, as congressional schedules often change and dozens of non refundable tickets would have cost even more in the long run. Either way he is one of few who send a portion of his budget back, and has been even before the desperate GOP high jacked the tea party and started posing as fiscally responsible.
It was also pretty disappointing when the SC audience booed Romney for having a Mexican father.
@Phyllis – That AP story about Ron Paul’s travel expenditures was complete garbage. The story was exposed by MSNBC reporter Lawrence O’Donnell. https://on.msnbc.com/wSaX65
Why is it always the group that claims to be so christian acts nothing like Jesus would? Dr. Paul is absolutely spot on in his foreign policy. Look , one example, if you were Iran wouldn’t you be trying to protect yourself if the GOP nominee was singing, “bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran”, on national television as McCain did in ’08. We need to do exactly as Paul says over seas – ok, one more – when I was in Costa Rica in the early 2000’s a cab driver told me that his country used to love the US – they did model their government using ours as a guide – but now they were very afraid of us. You can’t be friends if one party is terrified by the other. I also don’t believe we can have prosperity without Peace. Please consider a vote for Dr. Paul – we can’t afford a war with Iran or Pakistan. Thank you.
Who boos the golden rule?
I think Romney being booed for saying he would have signed the National Defence Autorization Act was more powerful than any other boos given the whole debate.
My comedian friend who I watched the debate with told me they try to get their best friends to sit in the audience as “laughers.” Laughers, he said, loosens up the rest of the audience to join in on the laughing. Works best if they have a really contagious laugh.
After the debate, he told me that he thought the same tactics might have been used against Paul, given the awful timing of what was being booed by the time the audience chimed in.
Hey Phyllis, have you tried to play the audio backwards yet. XD Keep looking I’m sure the’re something terrible about Dr. Paul yet to found. Maybe he fails to re use his toothpaste or kicks small puppies when nobodies looking….. ha ha ha
Ron Paul did not purchase first class tickets. He purchased refundable coach tickets. Since he frequently flies Continental airlines, he’ll use his frequent flier miles to upgrade to first class when available. Given the congressional ever changing schedule, he purchases the refundable so he can change his departure date and time. If he purchased the non-refundable advanced tickets and had to cancel his flight for congressional business, he would not be reimbursed for the ticket. It’s a standard practice, that is encouraged by the federal government, for all congressmen and their staff. This was a non-story that just attempted to smear the the good doctor’s name.
Blind patriotism is simply the public’s failure to be objective about our historic involvement in the middle east. Booing the reference to the golden rule as foreign policy just clarifies the lack of historical awareness in attendance in South Carolina on the day. Disappointing 8o(
The AP’s air-fare “story” has been thoroughly smashed into bits by MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell:
https://ronpaulflix.com/2012/01/ron-paul-exposed-flying-first-class-on-congressional-trips-jan-17-2012/
Expect more lies and distortions from the “free and independent press” as Ron Paul’s campaign continues to flourish.
He bought coach tickets and upgraded them with his frequent flyer points, as he frequently flies to Washington and back, allowing him to rack up a lot of said points.
South Carolina is disgusting if they boo the Golden Rule….Bible Belt my foot…more like the Hypocrisy Belt. The South is Christian in name only (remember slavery, Jim Crow, etc)? Ron Paul is probably the only good thing the South has ever produced, and he’s not even from there originally (he was born in Pittsburgh). I’m glad I’m from the Midwest, that’s for sure.
Princess Pelosi flew DC to San Francisco weekly in her gov.provided 737. Costing us taxpayers more than 300k per trip. Did anyone criticize her wasteful abuse?
Having watched Republican audience cheer when it was mentioned how many had been put to death in Texas under Rick Perry’s rule as governor and now South Carolina Republicans BOO the words of Jesus, I find it outrageous that Republicans still claim to be the party of life. Republicans also tacetly BOO Jesus’ words “Blessed are the Peacemakers” everytime they mock Ron Paul’s peace-making foreign policy. Christians who feel comfortable calling themselves republican out to read the Gospels a bit more, they might be surprised that Jesus is a promoter of peace not war, he thinks fairly highly of the poor and he is ANTI-Death penalty! Choose your label, Republican or Christian, but they are not even close to the same thing!
This article on the “boo” received by Ron Paul (at 57:35 and 59:44) after his foreign policy comments in the SC GOP Debate on 12 Jan 2012 is a disservice to balanced & accurate reporting, as it omits several key details which would provide appropriate context:
A. Ron Paul was cheered by the audience on 12 separate occasions :
1.) 00:48 Introductory cheer
2.) 35:47 You’re confused about my position
3.) 36:29 Military personnel campaign contributions
4.) 37:17 Baghdad embassy is a waste.
5.) 38:12 “I’ve never understood this [in regard to the GOP promotion of military spending], we’re supposed to be conservatives: spend less money!”
6.) 39:29 0% Fed. Income tax
7.) 39:52 0% Inflation tax
8.) 56:06 Congress should declare all wars
9.) 1:00:00 Country doesn’t need more wars
10.) 1:09:08 Current war policy = lots of lives for a lot of $ for a long time to come
11.) 1:09:31 NDAA is unconstitutional
12.) 1:13:54 Don’t give up on our Americna judicial system so easily – I beg of you!
B. Mitt Romney was booed on 2 occasions later in the debate over agreeing with the NDAA 2011, a law which Dr. Paul strongly opposes.
1.) 1:09:40
2.) 1:10:29
Underscoring this sentiment, Rick Santorum was cheered twice for backing the right to due process for accused terrorists:
1) 1:12:02
2) 1:12:29
Omissions of these key details demonstrate that the writer is neither fair nor balanced, but simply a lapdog hack. Besides, the boos & cheers of a few partisans who preregistered at an event with a selective attendance list are not newsworthy.

So, where’s the Dallas Ron Paul supporters group? I know as a Libertarian, whatever hyphenated group I belong to shouldn’t matter, but is there not a gay Ron Paul support group?
Caleb, looking at this story, it was only meant to cover the one issue of “booing the golden rule” It wasn’t implied it was meant to cover the entire debate, so your comment is #1 obvious to anyone who can read, and #2 a waste of time.
You’d think it would take a complete empathectomy to boo the Golden Rule. I give a bit of its history as well as showing Gingrich’s and Paul’s opposing worldviews as seen through the unpreachable Bible verses at my blog post: https://biblefunmentionables.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/boo-unto-others/
