Queer Liberaction, the newly formed LGBT direct action group, will hold its first “Milk box” at 4 p.m. Sunday in front of the now-closed Crossroads Market at Cedar Springs and Throckmorton. The group says MIlk box, in honor of Harvey MIlk, is a chance “to publicly speak our mind and educate Dallas’s Queer Community as to exactly how we are being oppressed.” Read the full press release after the jump.
Queer Liberaction Kicks Off Milk Box
What is Queer Liberaction’s “Milk box” you might be asking yourself. Â It is a way to celebrate our freedom of speech, but instead of getting up on a soapbox we will be getting up on a Milk box in honor of Harvey Milk. Our rights might be able to be taken from us, but they will never be able to steal our voice. Â
Help Queer Liberaction kick the Milk box off right this Sunday at 4:00 PM. We will meet at the corner of Throckmorton and Cedar Springs in front of the old Crossroads Bookstore to publicly speak our mind and educate Dallas’s Queer Community as to exactly how we are being oppressed. Angry over the current state of things, or tickled pink?  Come tell Dallas Gays and Lesbians about it or just come and listen and help hand out flyers. Anyone and everyone is welcome!
If you haven’t already done so, be sure to put our upcoming events on your calendar. QL will stage a Queer kiss-in on Saturday, February 7 at noon. This will take place by the Dallas Museum of Art at Ross and Harwood in Downtown Dallas. Also, be sure to attend our big Freedom to Marry Day demonstration at 11:30 am on Thursday, February 12. The festivities will begin in Founder’s Plaza outside the Records Building at 509 Main St. Â
Queer Liberaction is also in need of a few things to help make the Freedom to Marry Day demonstration a success. Please contact us if you’re able to help us with any of the following.
* Limousine rental for a couple hours
* Flowers, bouquets of flowers
* Rice, flower petals to throw, bubbles
* Poster board
* Professionally printed bannersÂ
* Donations

I think that it is shameless for this tiny fringe group in our community to exploit the good name of Harvey Milk for their latest media stunt to get on TV.
I knew Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk was a friend of mine. And Queer Liberaction, you are no Harvey Milk.
What did QL ever do to you? And OMG we didn’t call out the media! Thanks for posting this John.
Dallas is burning…
I have a surprise for you: this was MY idea and it had nothing to do with media. I am insulted that you would insinuate that the good work we are trying to do to educate our community is nothing more than an idle publicity stunt. We never called any media to come to this event and we weren’t trying to get on TV.
I am passionate about education (I will complete my MA in English in May on my way to becoming a college professor) and about people’s rights to express themselves. The Milk Box is about educating the masses and about allowing people to stand up and join the dialogue. We are doing this in the ‘gayborhood’ so that we can pass out educational information to lgbt people. While people are up talking on the milk box the rest of us were handing out fliers and educational information to the people that walked by. So many gay people don’t realize that they can be fired, denied housing (etc), because they are lgbt.
My vision is that people might stop for a couple moments and listen to what other lgbt people have to say about the important issues of today. The Milk Box is open for anyone to speak his or her mind.
We named it in honor of Harvey Milk because part of what inspired me to do it was the scene in the movie where he stands up on a milk box and starts talking to people. We are not trying to be “Harvey Milk”… we are trying to honor him.
Please don’t go around making assumptions that you know why we do what we are doing. It’s insulting. You may not agree with our methods, and that is fine, but don’t question our integrity without full information.
Now, as for media whoring… look more at freedom to marry day celebration. I can tell you I am doing everything in my power to make that as ridiculous and over the top as possible and will be SADLY disappointed if we don’t get some media attention. Blake and Gabe may not like being in front of TV cameras but I sure do!!!
Also… check Blake, Sam, and, of course, fabulous me, out on Israel Luna’s show “the 10%” this Friday!!
Dear Dallas, specifically those dissonent and divisive voice like Dallas Is Burning,
I agree with you, Mr. Burning, if that is your real name. For QueerLiberaction to claim the name of Harvey Milk is absolutely shameless. And bravo! Shame is such an over rated emotion. In fact, it is shame that keeps us from voicing our needs, as QueerLiberaction is so desperately trying to. It is shame that keeps us from opposing our oppressors. It is shame that closes the closet door on us. But we must remember that the closet door has not ever been, not will it ever be locked. Our choice to remain complacent, silent, or worse, univolved and judgemental from the sidelines is the only thing that keeps us from obtaining the freedom and equality we so desperately need. There is, however, one person who I think would be ashamed. Harvey Milk. He would be ashamed to have called someone who scoffs and decries the efforts of young people fighting for equality as any sort of friend. Your memories mean nothing next to the great spirit of contention and courage that Harvey has left for us to claim, if we only have the balls. I invite you to either remain silent in your closet, or to join others working towards positive goals in the light, but please sir, and all those like you, do not whimper at us from behind your closet doors.
