Politico: Valdez, White in runoff for Dem nomination for governor

With 44 percent of the precincts in Texas reporting, former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez holds a comfortable 103,000-plus vote lead over her closest competitor, Andrew White of Houston in the race for the Democratic nomination for Texas governor.But her isn’t large enough to avoid a runoff.
Politico has called the race as a runoff between the two leaders, with less than half the precincts reporting. Valdez has 42.8 percent and White has 28.1 percent. Dallas businessman Jeffrey Payne is in fifth place with 4.8 percent.
If the percentages remain consistent as the rest of the votes are counted, Valdez and White will face each other in a May 22 runoff. The runoff winner will face incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, who — with more than half of the Republican precincts reporting — was winning easily with 90.4 percent.
