Attackers hit student in the head; student was treated and released

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Police are investigating an anti-gay attack on a University of Virginia student and his friend.

University officials say five young men attacked the 18-year-old student and his friend while yelling slurs about gays early April 4 in a Scott Stadium parking lot. The attackers smashed the student’s mobile phone while he tried to call for help.

A police report says the attackers hit the student in the back of the head. He was treated at the university medical center and released.

Dean of Sudents Allen Groves said in a statement sent to university students and employees that the assault was motivated by the victims’ perceived sexual orientation. He says such attacks are exceedingly rare at U.Va.
