Here’s a photo of the victim in the attack the other night on Dickason Avenue in Oak Lawn. His name is Jimmy Dean. We still don’t have any more information on his condition. This photo was forwarded to me by Michael Robinson, an eyewitness to the crime. Robinson said Dean was beaten so severely that police couldn’t identify him. So they sent Robinson this photo to confirm that it was the same man Robinson had met a few minutes before the attack. To read my story about the attack, which was updated Friday and includes photos of the Robinson and the suspects, go here.
My heart just sank when I read of this news in the DV. I predict that things will continue to get worse for Gay Americans. Because of the heightened marriage movement in California. I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t help but think things will get worse similar to the Civil Rights Movement in the 60’s. Be on alert and do not walk alone! Although Mr. Dean is in critical condition it could have been worse had he been alone. This type of action is not tolerable and the gay community should be contacting city elected officials to voice their concern that this is not being tried as a hate crime. The testimonies of Mr. Robinson and the officers is enough to try them for several counts including hate crime. I urge everyone to make the phone call, send an email and let our officials realize that we will not tolerate this behavior! Be safe out there.
