Susan Carson is fully aware that this Sunday, she’ll be pulling double duty in the June heat. But don’t expect her to complain. She’ll probably brush it off with a "Shucks, no!" Because for all the work, it’s something she believes in.

Her duo Bandmates will be performing on the afternoon roster at Jack’s Backyard for the animal benefit Rockin’ for Rescue Fest 2010, a group for which Carson serves as a board member.

"We’re so excited about this event and to raise money for rescue organizations," she says. "This will be our biggest one."

Rockin’ for Rescue is an all-day affair to benefit Lost Paws for Texas, a rescue shelter for dogs and cats in Carrollton. The first was held last year at Poor David’s Pub, but for the second outing, Carson and company wanted to look into an outdoor spot. Being friends with Kathy Jack came in handy; Jack offered up the venue’s stage and patio for animals and the people who love them.

"It all fell together so quick and the spot is perfect because people can bring their dogs," Carson says. "And it was easy for the bands to get behind it because they’re all animal lovers. I’m real proud of how it came together."

Did it ever. Starting at noon, a slate of 10 bands play every hour until 9 p.m. Bandmates is snug in the middle, but the lineup includes local and community faves such as Heather Knox, Kathy and Bella and the Mojo Dolls. Every $10 admission includes a raffle ticket. Band merchandise, gift cards and more will be raffled off.

But perhaps the real treasure to win (and even buy) is the unique compilation CD of local bands that have donated their music. The inaugural CD had a track donated by formal local music hero Edie Brickell that, according to Carson, can only be found on that CD. She’s not spilling if any such tracks will be on this year’s compilation.

"These bands have donated their music and time for this and the disc," she says. "I think everyone just has a strong feeling for animals — especially the gay community."

The board member part of Carson weighs in with enthusiasm, but the musician side of her can’t help but sneak out.

"Jack’s is great for this with the patio and even food," she says. "I figure the community will come out in full force for this. It’s gonna be awesome!"
