Councilman Omar Narvaez and transgender activist and educator Nicole O’Hara Munro have been named grand marshals of the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. Munro is the first transgender grand marshal named by the parade.
From their bios:
Nicole attended school in New Orleans, Louisiana and currently resides in Dallas, Texas. She is a very charming, engaging and smart personality in our LGBTQ community. Besides bartending at Zippers and being the show hostess at Marty’s Live, Nicole is a strident activist and educator for transgendered rights. She holds a very high profile as a voice for the trans community on many levels. Well versed on education, health and safety issues for the trans community, Nicole leads by example by living large and out loud in the Dallas community. She currently works with A Nu Trans Movement and a LGBTQ youth group.
Omar has more than a decade of hard work and leadership in the Dallas LGBT community and he is the first “openly” gay councilperson in more than a decade. He also works diligently with Lambda Legal of Dallas as the community liaison. He is a former president of Dallas County Stonewall Democrats, and former member of the Dallas County School Board. His commitment to change in attitudes towards diversity and equality make him a strong advocate within the LGBTQ community.
